Haiti 8, January 2013: Tuesday Update

From Hans, Tuesday evening:

Good evening, friends, from the team at Jacob’s Well. We had a wonderful first day of camp with 221 children and 26 young adult Haitian counselors from the village of Tse Guinea. We had one activity period in the morning, two in the afternoon, two Bible dramas about the life of Elijah, and a very delicious lunch. Our activities included riflery, archery, crafts, Bible memory, whiffle ball/baseball, pitball, steal the bacon, and sports. Each child will get to rotate through all of the activities by day three of camp. Our team oversaw these activities, but the Haitian counselors and activity leaders led them. The Elijah drama included the story of the widow and her son in the morning and the contest with the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel in the afternoon. Fire fell “from heaven” (Gabe Johnson in a tree sending a flaming toilet paper roll down fishing line to the kerosene soaked altar). Unfortunately, the fire didn’t quite make it to the altar, but it was close enough to get the point across.

Jimmy did some more plumbing on the toilets today, and we started welding the first of the chair carts. The drinking water fountain saw its first use today, and after some adjustments to the drain line, worked wonderfully. The fountain is designed so that kids can wash their hands and get a drink sanitarily and efficiently from the filtered water system here at camp. (no cups to wash, thanks to the ingenuity of Karin Monson who had the idea on the Haiti 7 trip.) Funds for the fountain were donated by the camp kids, and the basins were supplied by Platt Heating and Air. Thank you Edie, Emma, Will, Tommy, and Hannah, and Lawrence Richie!

Please pray for our second day of camp tomorrow. The weather has been perfect, and our team is all healthy. We are eating like kings and working hard. Thank you for your support, and praise God with us for the outcome!!

Goodnight and God bless!
