Always Use Words

“Open wide and say, ‘Aaaahhh’.” We have all heard this dreaded words from our favorite tooth poker (just kidding, we love our dentist friends!). One of my favorite moments when the Bible speaks of an open mouth comes in Acts 8:35, “And Philip opened his mouth and beginning from this Scripture he preached Jesus to him.” This is toward the end of Philip’s gospel interaction with the Ethiopian eunuch.

Why would the Bible record such an obvious fact about communication? Would we have assumed he used sign language or played charades? It was obvious so we wouldn’t miss it! Philip had to open his mouth and speak the truth of the gospel to this man! This example completely debunks the tired Christian adage, “Share the gospel always, and if necessary use words.” To me this is about 50% correct. And I don’t know about your school, but at my school 50% was failing.

That phrase should be “Share the gospel and ALWAYS use words.” We aren’t going to “nice” people into the Kingdom. The presence of mere morality doesn’t lead someone to the foot of the cross in repentance. We must open our mouths and preach Jesus in the little moments God places us in every week.

So let’s take a page out of Philip’s playbook and open our mouths and say “Aaaaahhhhh” with the gospel!
